After being rained on in Juneau, snowed on in Haines, and almost frozen in Whitehorse, I decided to go down to the 48th parallel near Vancouver, BC. Abbotsford/Aldergrove was my destination. I decided to visit my children and their families. Surprise, surprise, my daughter-in-law's baby decided to make an appearance, seven weeks early!
Born on January 22nd, 2012, Kaleb Alexander Lang weighed 4 pounds, 1.5 ounces, fully developed and very healthy. Although his mother was discharged from the hospital on January 25th, he was sentenced to stay at the hospital until he has gained enough weight to be legal in a carseat, minimum five pounds. (Maybe they should feed him some McD's burgers and fries...HaHa).
I was also available to attend my 3rd grandson's (Ethan) 11th birthday dinner at his parent's new house. All in all, a fortuitous trip!
While here, I'm also taking advantage of the cost reductions to fix my car up, for it to last a few more kilometers safely. Windshield, tires, headlight lenses, oil change, all in a good cause, safe driving, day or night.
I wanted to check out what was available in Bellingham and had to go through the Peace Arch Crossing. It took about ten minutes and the agent was polite and let me through without a lot of flack which some are prone to do.
After some late lunch and a quick trip through WalMart, I returned to Abbotsford by the Sumas-Huntingdon Crossing. Today a quick trip to Sumas for gas and lunch, then back home. Gas in Sumas was $3.53 a gallon. What a saving!!!

Well, last night, I wanted some Japanese sushi for supper and upon entering the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised to discover one of the cooks was a friend who used to work at my hotel restaurant. I spent a nice evening conversing with the staff and drinking Sake, one of my favourites. I really look forward to returning there again while I am here.
That's all for now. Watch for the next episode of the travels of the Yukoner!

Haines & Over the top

Hello again. I have now arrived in Haines, Alaska, after a three hour delay because the Gyrometer on the ferry was not working and had to be repaired. The trip was uneventful with light following seas and a tail wind to boot. You could see whitecaps out on the water and the ferry had a slight roll but all-in-all, a great trip on the water. After unloading at the Haines Terminal, I headed out to the Chilkoot Park area to see if any of the grizzly bears were still around.

The picture shows the ones in which I was interested. They must have gone into hibernation as none were to be seen. I returned to Haines and found the city had been buried in the snow storm of Friday night when we came through on the ferry. After having supper, I found my camping spot for the night. Saturday morning, after breakfast, I took my leave of Haines and started up the highway back to Canada. I saw many eagles like this one watching for their opportunity to catch breakfast.

There is much competition amongst the visiting eagles for the salmon going up the river to spawn at this time of the year. More than 6000 eagles visit this hunting ground for the feed of fish which is available. From the beginning of November until the end of February, the salmon stock come into the Chilkat River to spawn.

This cow moose was trying to hide but there was enough open spaces between the trees to get a good image with my camera. She's very photogenic, isn't she? It's a good thing it wasn't hunting season. Just after I passed the highest part of the highway, I found this cross fox hunting for his breakfast, probably an Arctic Ground Squirrel, which burrows it's way under the snow looking for ripened grass seeds.
I also had the opportunity to watch a grader/snowblower team clearing some of the snow from the highway as shown in the next photo. A highly efficient method of snow removal.

I will be leaving later this week for the rest of my winter trip. The nice part of the trip was from Whitehorse in the early morning with the sunrise coming in over the snowcapped mountains. It was sure pretty seeing the sun hit the tops of the mountains.(Photo included)

I took the ferry from Skagway to Juneau, by way of Haines. The view from the ferry was hampered by the snow storm through which we travelled. Haines, Alaska, was lost in the storm as we approached the dock. The crew of the ferry was careful and thorough. The approach was perfectly performed, the landing soft and accurate. Once we had left Haines, the trip moved into the darkness and as we travelled closer to Juneau,the weather warmed and the snow turned to heavy rainfall.

Arriving in Juneau, the rainstorm continued throughout the night and all of Saturday. I managed to take a few photos of the Governor's Mansion during the day and evening from my motel room. It is so hard to find my way around the inner part of the town because the traffic control patterns are very diversionary, little sections disembodied from the other parts of the inner city.

The shopping center of the inner city has narrow streets and little parking areas, apart from a large parking garage just off the downtown core.

This will be a long trip through Alaska at a time when most tourists stay home, apart from the hardy tourists who are at home in the snow, cold, and wind. I look forward to seeing Alaska in her hardest time of the year. Much happens in the far north of the 60th parallel that we don't see too much of, skiing, mushing, snowmobilling, and of course, staying warm in front of a blazing fireplace.
This day is coming to a close as bedtime is nearly here. 4am start tomorrow, ferry to Haines, should be a great day!
So long for now.

Trying Once Again!!

Dear folks;
I wrote about my European trip, and then crashed and burned... I stopped writing for no other reason than procrastination. Well, here I am again, apologetic and soulful. I don't promise to not miss a day, to forget to write or be here at all times, but I do promise to do my best...MY BEST...to keep up this blog on a regular basis. No New Years resolutions to set my life by, and then break.
Why is it that we must always make promises to do this, or that, and then we disappoint someone or other when we don't accomplish what we promised. Does that mean we are not trustworthy, or just incapable of living up to our promises, or of other peoples' expectations of us?

As of January 1st, 2012, I am retired from working for someone else. I won't be like many other people who retire and then travel to their heart's content, but, I will travel about the Yukon and close areas doing my photography of local events, the environment and the animals as they appear.

As I write this blog tonight, I am thinking about my future endeavours. It's just possible that I may be able to do my photography with enough skill to have people purchase my photographs as souvenirs to support myself with my craft. I love the world around me and it is my goal to portray it with a passion that stands out to other people.
Another of the activities which I will attempt is the challenge of two things, both in the health issues which I have - losing weight and quit smoking.
But this is the New Year! No chicken hatching before it's time.

I have included a few photos which have been taken this past year. I won't bore you with any from my European trip, but instead hope to wow! you with some new Yukon and Alaska ones which brought me great pleasure, mainly the animals and views of this beautiful territory. I hope you will be impressed enough to plan a visit to our wonderful part of the continent.

Fairbanks to Home!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TUDBssRCVBI/AAAAAAAAAOU/0qew7kClYVU/s320/100_2910.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566662112970953746" />
I guess I should say I am happy to be on my way home at last. Well, I am!!! I arrived in Fairbanks right on time, well, a half hour later than the scheduled time - on time, I guess, as most airlines go. I waited for my car to arrive, but alas, no ride. Then I had the idea, maybe I should check to see if my car had been delivered. Well, what a pleasant surprize. I found out my keys were waiting to be picked up at the Hertz dealer desk.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TUDBrzSz7iI/AAAAAAAAAOE/3DvgaoTn1hc/s320/100_2911.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566662097677577762" />
After finding my car in the parking lot, I drove through the checkout and found a service station to fill my tank and I was on my way home, at last.
After being on the highway for about two hours, I was starting to fall asleep at the wheel. Figuring I could make it to Tok, Alaska, I continued driving. Bad idea...I ended up in a snow bank 22 miles from Tok, necessitating a tow from the toolies. After signing for a $340 towing bill, I had something to eat at Fast Eddies and continued on my way.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TUDBs05YlfI/AAAAAAAAAOc/3y2Se0e_FO4/s320/100_2909.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566662115287668210" />
As the day approached, I was greeted with some amazing vistas of beauty. The sun rose on some of the prettiest pictures of the true north - trees frosted with snow and ice. The pictures I was able to take are here for all to see.
I made it home with 9 kilometers of gas left in my gastank. I immediately went to bed and over the next 48 hours had 30 hours of sleep.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TUDBsTnKBHI/AAAAAAAAAOM/6zhnHI5dPTs/s320/100_2908.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566662106352845938" />
Being refreshed by the long sleep, I tackled the piled up mail and communications. As usual, bills to pay and special offers from businesses were all I had to look forward to. Checking my email, a note from the boss to see when I could return to work, which of course, was as soon as possible, to be able to pay for those accrued bills. What a Joy!!

Well, the long and winding road has finally led me to my "Home Sweet Home". It was a long road and it had a few twists and turns, but I have reached my final destination, home.
This has been an expensive trip to see a part of the world that many people, from abroad and locally, have told me about, but all in all, it has been a profitable one in more ways than financially. Financially, it has been a bust, as now I have to pay for the privilege of having travelled around Europe. Socially, it has been a great success. I have made many new friends, and acquaintances, in places I never thought I would ever visit. It was also an eye-opener to see how the world of my preconceptions was nowhere near what I had preconceived. The differences in the cultures of the various countries which I visited, were not as great as I had supposed. People still lived as I do at home. They shop, they work, and they pay bills, just as I do.
Where I had thought to learn about the differences of a country and its people, I discovered a disproportionate number of "foreigners" in their place. Immigration throughout Europe has increased exponentially, and it is not uncommon to encounter people from an entirely different culture in place of the historically local people.
This was, in a way, difficult for me to assimulate into my thinking. I am used to being one of the "historically local people". It was hard for me to imagine how a prominent culture could be so overwhelmed by other cultures, that the original culture would begin to lose it's local flavour.
When I think of our Canadian culture, I remember that it is an homogenous mixture of many different cultures from around the world. Maybe, because we, as a physical landmass, are further away from the rest of the world, we are not currently experiencing the massive movement of many cultures integrating with our own. It has been a slow process of change which is not as noticable as it is in Europe. There, the immigration policies of the various countries are more lax than our own. Also, the access to another country is easier for the immigration process.
Here in the Yukon, there is more of an influx of Canadians into the north as more and more jobs become available. "Chechakos", new people who have not spent a winter in the north, have been steadily arriving, finding employment and housing for themselves. Most Canadians can handle the cold of our winters as the climate in the south is sometimes more fierce than we experience in the north. Snow and windy conditions are what make some people dislike the north, but those who enjoy winter sports, in particular, snowmobiling and dog sledding, take to the north, like a seal to water.
The main thing is, I'm home again! Back to my mountains, wild animals by the roadside, creeks, lakes, and rivers to fish in, any number of places to visit and camp at. Sunsets and sunrises, nighttime aurora borealis to watch and photograph, friends to share with - all the things that make this my home.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://theyukoner.blogspot.com/2011/01/home-again-what-joy.html' title='Home again! I am sitting here in the Seatac airport in Seattle, Washington. It is 2:45 in the morning and the place is beginning to come alive, slowly, of course, but, surely. The night janitors are doing their thing, dusting, sweeping and washing the floors, and not forgetting, the cleaning of the washrooms, a never-ending job at the best of times. The armed security guards are making their rounds and being very unobtrusive, considering the responsabilities of their position. Some of the coffee and snack vendors are doing their early morning prep to be ready for the avalanche of people who will descend on their booths looking for their morning coffee and donut before flying off to unknown destinations.
I won't be leaving the airport until 21:00 hours tonight. I will be able to observe the hustle and bustle of humanity as it flows through the doors and passageways of the airport. I have had the opportunity to observe this anthill of activity in several places on this voyage of mine, airports, bus terminals, train stations and on the streets of many cities as I pass through the rush of humanity going about their everyday activities. I am constantly amazed at the complexity, yet simplicity of this dance of life.
My mind has been working constantly while on this trip, especially on how, no matter where I have been, the life and lives around me doesn't change. There are the complexities of human relationships which, as a whole, we, as humans on this planet, need to observe in order that there is order. Perhaps, my observations won't make any sense to the readers of this column, but, I guess, they are after all, only my observations. People are the same everywhere I have been. They move around the streets, shopping for their everyday food, and other necessities.
They travel to work and to do business, on busses, subways, taxis, trains, commuter trains, bicycles, scooters and motorcycles and, especially on foot. It's no wonder that the average European is in such good physical condition. They drink expresso coffee (a serious jolt of caffeine) and have a sweet pastry or croissant for breakfast. Many will have a quick bun with cheese and meat for lunch, and then eat a healthy supper to end the day. Many drink a beer for lunch, or two, and yet, while travelling around Europe, I didn't see anyone who was drunk. There is a responsibility to those people which is unnoticed in the normal observation of the population. I wasn't looking for the inebriation of the populace as a conscious observation, but when I thought about it for a bit, I realized that I hadn't seen the typical drunkeness which we sometimes observe in our own society. Granted, I wasn't paying any particular attention to the drinkers, but still, as a whole, the population seems to know when to quit!
I'm beginning to ramble here, so I shall close this blog for now and I will resume when I get settled back at home. Whitehorse...here I come.
To my spanish and french friends who are following this blog, I'm sorry that I am not publishing today as I don't know how this would translate into another language with the translator. A la manana, et a bientot!

Lisboa at last!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TTBLlBQdC9I/AAAAAAAAANk/6tQnANmVSVE/s320/100_2861.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562028639167253458" /> Well folks, my adventure is drawing to a close. I am finally in Lisbon, Portugal. This is my final European destination and guess what! The fog is so thick, I can barely see across the parking lot at the airport.
I managed to take a few photographs when I first arrived at the Sante Apolonia train station. By the time I had taken the city bus to the airport, the fog had rolled in off the sea and nothing was to be seen. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TTBLlYDhWRI/AAAAAAAAAN0/0Ltf6djrqfM/s320/100_2872.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562028645287024914" />
Yesterday, I took a few shots around the airport, but unfortunately, they are not your NORMAL tourist photographs. I have a penchent for looking for the unusual as you can see by the birds on the lamppost. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TTBLlcFoanI/AAAAAAAAANs/ODPYzDoJ1nM/s320/100_2863.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562028646369618546" />
Last evening, I was outside and realized the taxis here, are almost as prolific as they were at the Madrid, Chamartin Train Station. In the thick fog, the lineup of waiting taxicabs makes it's ghostly appearance. I will post this blog today and hopefully I'll have something to say before I leave Europe for the long flight home on Sunday morning, with maybe some photos too. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TTBLlpsLshI/AAAAAAAAAN8/zZKULGw5DLU/s320/100_2873.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562028650020975122" />

Madrid, Spain

Finally, I am catching up in my blogging.
What can be said about Paris that hasn't yet been said? Not much! I came to know my way around Paris by some trial and much error, but I did get some of what I wanted to do, done. I took photos of the Arc de Triomph, the Eiffel Tower, The Louvres, Sacre Coeur Cathedral, the Champ d'Elysees and some photos of Paris in general. The Eiffel Tower was easy to see from many places in Paris, if you could see through the low cloud cover or the fog over the city.
No mucho!
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TSNqJDhtk5I/AAAAAAAAALU/tOBvHTl5EgQ/s320/100_2517.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558403068903396242" />
One of the things which interested me here, and for that matter, in most of the cities I have visited, was the lose of culture, native to each country and city.
There is a diversification to all the cities which was there before but not that noticeable. Today, where before, there was a french restaurant on every corner, there is now a restaurant of a different culture or ethnic background. In my pursuit of italian food in Rome, german food in Hamburg, french food in France, I found it difficult to locate.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TSNrbCn256I/AAAAAAAAALk/RYbZaA6ijSk/s320/100_2521.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558404477410011042" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TSNxhsghQdI/AAAAAAAAALs/3J4SMTgKmAc/s320/100_2481.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558411188802503122" />
I hope everyone has been checking out the blog. I was met at the train station and after a quick visit to their home to leave my baggage, I was whisked away to visit Chartres while there was dry weather, albeit, a very cloudy and cold day. I was taken to the Chartres Cathedral, a church which was built in the eleventh century. The spires rising above the city can be seen from 20 or more miles away in any direction, weather permitting, of course, as the church is built on the only hill for many miles around.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TRoBvrQ0YfI/AAAAAAAAAKk/xw3WIgc6j4I/s320/100_2302.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555755008893673970" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TRn6RXfUWKI/AAAAAAAAAKM/vhOdO9L6o7Q/s320/100_2106.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555746791608309922" />
Riding the buses, I get to see more of the city and get a small feeling of the people. Of course, at this time of year, everyone is concerned primarily about Christmas. Many of the people whom I met and spoke with, were like me, single, older and living away from relatives. They also were experiencing the aloneness of the season. So I will have Christmas dinner at the local pub called Saints & Sinners on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day the pub is open for Happy Hour from noon until three pm. A few of us will be there to pass the time with new and old friends.
Tomorrow, I will be going back into Central London to visit the Tower of London, High Park and possibly the Sea Life Aquarium. I will post today and tomorrow's photos on Facebook.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TRn6Rt8QptI/AAAAAAAAAKU/czwBFCQ6nSU/s320/100_2121.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555746797635282642" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TRn6R-elLfI/AAAAAAAAAKc/IKFerDMJgvs/s320/100_2128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555746802074201586" />

Hamburgers Galore - Everywhere You Look

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQ0JlB2vKuI/AAAAAAAAAJw/CFKE3kYcB0k/s320/100_1989.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552104447375518434" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQ0JlAzMYJI/AAAAAAAAAJo/BgpocMKAIf0/s320/100_1995.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552104447092220050" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQ0Jky0oxNI/AAAAAAAAAJg/M4H8zbadtN4/s320/100_1996.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552104443340178642" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQ0Jkje9o8I/AAAAAAAAAJY/17mlE-E5IX8/s320/100_2007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552104439222739906" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQ0JkZlmkFI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/SyPYQNRAtho/s320/100_2006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552104436566233170" />
Hamburgers galore! I didn't know that people who live in Hamburg were called Hamburgers. McDonald's and Burger King aside, there are a lot of people in this huge city. It being the time of the Christmas sidewalk sales, there were as many people crowded into the fair sites as there were at the Salzburg Christmas Fair. I finally connected with my friend Jochen today, and he showed me some of Hamburg, his city.

This is the season to be jolly and we were walking everywhere. We were having such a great time together, I didn't realize how far we had walked until Joe asked me if I wanted to walk home or take the train. The train, of course. We had walked so far, I don't think I could have walked home.

When we returned to our starting point, it was only right that we sit in a sidewalk vendor's booth and have a glouwein, a spiced Christmas drink (with rum, of course). As we walked around the central part of Hamburg, we were treated to an impromptu Christmas parade complete with Lady Santa, serenaded by musicians on a balcony of a large store, and watched the oldest river steam tourboat (150 years old) push it's way through an ice covered lake with its load of passengers.

The Prague Blog!

I am here in Prague, Praha to some and Praga to others. This is one beautiful ancient city. How the people have been able to restore the damage after many wars is really amazing. I have been a small part of this city for 3 days now. I can still get lost amongst the tiny winding streets. I have not mastered the art of using the public transportation yet. I have managed to find my way to the old city and up the tramway to the top of the mountain. I still haven't found my way to the castle yet. I get so turned around, I feel like I'm chasing my tail.

Todavía no he encontrado mi camino hacia el castillo todavía.
The view from the bridge, both up and down the river Voltava, is spectacular. The riverboat tours continue through rain, sun or as life would have it, SNOW and cold. The wildlife, in the form of ring-necked mallards, seagulls, and wild white swans, (I have seen black swans while here, but was unable to get to my camera in time) continue to fend for themselves along the river edges. Meanwhile, the locals are busy feeding, and watering the tourists and visitors, such as I, in different forms of establishments. There are many hundreds of people who pass over this bridge every day, no matter what the weather.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQtYCNkiFSI/AAAAAAAAAI4/f0p59J3TQN4/s320/100_1867.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5551627760690140450" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQtYB33c9qI/AAAAAAAAAIw/qAg-KwQFlu0/s320/100_1814.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5551627754863916706" />
This is one of the sculptures which adorn both sides of the bridge thoroughfare. The shiny places on this statue are from people rubbing the surface for good luck, and to have their prayer come true. I am including a few pictures today of the river and the special astrological clock in Wensaslas Square.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TQtYCcnkxkI/AAAAAAAAAJA/YBatST22PLs/s320/100_1887.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5551627764729431618" />

As I write this blog, there is a huge Christmas fair going on here in the square. There are booths which sell hot drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, teas, hot chocolate, etc. Sausage vendors, hat vendors, decorations and cold weather clothing vendors. Wireless systems are at a premium tonight here at the hostel. Everyone is taking bandwidth and there isn't much left to upload for very long.
My first train ride was a long one, thirteen and a half hours in a compartment with 4 other people, one a four year old who didn't want to sleep. I have picked up a nasty cough and I felt so bad for my fellow passengers, that I stood out in the passageway for most of the night, so they wouldn't be disturbed. This made for a rough night for me. Today after checking in at the hostel, I slept for 5 hours. I still feel rough around the edges but will be able to sleep more later tonight.
I went out for an early supper and discovered that in Vienna, there are many Turkish restaurants. The food I had was really good and quite filling. A type of patty made with lamb and beef with garlic was the main item, A green salad and something like a sticky rice complimented the patties which had a tomato and yogurt sauce on a bed of bread chunks. This was an excellent idea for several dishes which I have served in my restaurants.
Many of the people whom I have had reason to talk to are friendly and as cooperative as they could be with our limited communications capacity.
I am sitting here with a latte machiato coffee, something I have never ordered at home, but discovered it is the closest to a canadian coffee which is served over here. Also it comes in a large size, one cup does it all.
A few other guests are sitting around me here in the common room and everyone is on line. I am prewriting my blog, so tonight there are no pictures as it takes too long to upload. I took a few photos here in Vienna as I'm only here for a short time.
Although I am sitting with some others and discussing different things, I realize just how much I miss my friends from home. The weather since I arrived in Vienna, is typical Yukon weather and almost makes me homesick (not really..well maybe a little). Windy, cold and snowing..what you think?
I'll say goodnight for now and try to upload as quickly as possible.

Last thoughts in Rome.

Well, the time has come to say "Salut a Roma". I hate to say it, but, I really love this town. Were I rich enough, I could settle here quite easily. The atmosphere here is unlike anyplace I have ever been. Integrating into this society would not be hard. There is an overwhelming atmosphere generated by the millions of people who live and work here. Samples, good and bad, of society are all around you as you walk or ride the buses. Today I am generating my next few days travel arrangements. The rail system is gigantic and complicated, but there is method to the madness. I will be leaving tomorrow evening for Vienna, Austria. I'll be passing through Bologna, and Verona, Italy. I will arrive in Vienna about 08:30am on thursday and leaving there for Salzburg on friday evening. I'll be spending about 3 days in Salzburg and then on to Berlin.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TP4-9HTMnII/AAAAAAAAAIA/-H9rxqmElLo/s320/100_1604.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547941010619538562" />
This is a very hot-blooded country with very strong feelings about life. Some things are expensive and others not so. I find though, that I have not spent much money while here. Time seems to go by quickly as life is very fast paced for me here in comparison to my home town. I just never seem to have enough time in the day to accomplish whatever I have planned to do. I have seen much of Rome but not all of it was the major attractions which tourists normally visit. I rode buses from one terminal to another in several directions and discovered totally different environments in each direction. The differences were subtle in some cases, but were there none-the-less. Ethnic communities are spread throughout the area. It is easier to see while travelling on the different bus lines as the cultural differences become apparent through dress and language. "All roads lead to Rome" is as true today as in was in Roman times.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TP5AYlrEirI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/3SePS0i_vro/s320/100_1606.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547942582140832434" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TP4_jsxnSZI/AAAAAAAAAII/n6EjPdrwfwI/s320/100_1554.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547941673514256786" />

Vatican Museum

Well folks, it was an adventurous day. First of all, now think of this, I HAD TO WALK. My doctor tells me I should walk more for my heart health. Well, I walked. From my hotel to the Termini Centrale, through the many tunnels from one track to another, I found the right subway platform to get to the Vatican. As I had entered the wrong entrance, it was a serious walk to my final destination. Finally situated on the train, I realized people were just the same everywhere you go - in a hurry and desperate to go someplace! The ride was pleasant enough and even enjoyable. When a seat became available, a older lady was surprised when I offered her the seat. I guess courtesy is a lost art in some parts of the world.

After arriving at the proper station, again, I had to walk. A lady on the street guided me to the proper direction for access to the Vatican Museum. Unknown to me was the actual distance to travel to get there. After a 20 minute walk (for me in my seriously unphysical condition), I arrived at the Museum - along with several hundred other visitors, groups and individuals.

After standing in a slow moving lineup of people, I finally arrived at the doors to the museum, itself. As the flow of people is governed by the Vatican's very efficient constabulary, movement was then through security and ticket booths. Efficiency was the word of the day. We were assembled and moved like sheep to the slaughter. Once in the actual museum, you could take your time visiting the exquisite exibitions of Egyption artifacts up through the current Vatican history.
The tapestries, paintings, and sculptures surround you as you travel through the many hallways which guide you at last to the Sistine Chapel, the culmination of the visit to the Vatican Museum. Although you are there with many other tourists from all over the world, I found that it was almost as if you were all alone with the saints of the Catholic Church.

While I was sitting on a bench, I realized that I was sitting where a famous Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church had voted on who would be the next Pope. After praying for my friends and family in this holy place, I asked a Vatican guard if this was where the enclave was held for the election of the Pope. I was told that not 5 feet away from me was where the stove was situated where they burned the ballots after each vote, black smoke for a nay vote and white smoke to indicate that a Pope had been elected. We were warned upon entry into this room, that there would be no photographs taken while in this sacred place. I did, however notice that some people were indeed sneaking some shots of the beautifully restored artwork on the ceiling and walls. Believe me, it is beautiful and tranquil. The angel scenes on the walls were absolutely gorgeous. The detail was a thing of beauty. All of the artwork was inspiring.

Finally making my way out to the streets of Rome again, I found another restaurant to have lunch. The gnocchi with meat and tomato sauce was excellent, and a half bottle of red wine helped to ease the necessity of walking back to the metro terminal to return to downtown Rome. After making my way back to the hotel, I immediately had a 4 hour sleep to ease the pain of legs, long unused. After another great meal at Mamma Angela's, the rest of the evening (until 3 am) was spent sousing in the local pub, with old friends (3 days worth) and new.

A Down Day

Well folks, I'm sorry to say, the body has let me down, literally. Since my travels were so long, my legs and feet have swollen up quite badly. I have taken today off to allow them to shrink back to normal. My blog tonight is definitely not inspiring. I made a couple of small ventures out, but only for necessities, breakfast, supper and a new toothbrush as mine was left at home. The rest of tonight will be spent with my feet raised and resting.
Tomorrow, I will venture out again. First is the subway system to and from the Vatican, then the Vatican itself. St. Peter's Square is included in a full day of tourism. Maybe I'll see the Bernini sculpture, Fountain of the Angels from the movie "Angels & Demons". When I am in Paris, I will try to follow the "Rose Line" from the movie "The Davinci Code" concluding at the Louvres Gallery.
The next few days will be busy for me. I now have a map which shows where all the sights are located in relationship to my hotel. I have a good photo of it, so I will post it also. So much for today. Ciao, amores.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fI7dsfDvp-M/TPlYEZZRn5I/AAAAAAAAAGw/atgknenUl64/s400/100_1499.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546561248643096466" />
Mañana, me atrevo a salir.
Demain, je me risque à nouveau.
Ciao, amores.

Bella Roma! After wandering the streets of Rome for about an hour, I finally found my hotel. The weather was cooperating with a beautiful sunny day. Cosidering that I had left Fairbanks at -37C, this was a very balmy +13C. People looked at me funny, because they were dressed in winter clothing and I was walking around in a t-shirt, and perspiring freely. After getting situated in my hotel, the first thing I enjoyed was a 7 hour sleep to catch up on some of the sleep I missed on the airplane. I arose at 1900 hours and went to eat my first real italian meal.
The first thing my waiter, Giovanni, did was to bring me a glass of Italian champagne to celebrate my arrival in Bella Roma! A supper of fettuccini with portocini mushroom sauce and a veal scallopini with a light lemon sauce began my adventure with foods of Europe. I sat in an outdoor setting with a late rainstorm brewing around me. To some people, it would have seemed as if hell was sending me a warning, but I enjoyed my dinner with gusto. A young man from Argentina, and a second waiter from Romania, helped to make my first evening in Rome a success.
Por fin he llegado a Roma, Italia.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://theyukoner.blogspot.com/2010/12/bella-roma-at-last.html' title='Bella Roma! I only had 17 hours to drive to Fairbanks. I am sitting here in the Fairbanks Airport waiting for the boarding call for the 1:20 AM direct flight to Seattle's SeaTac Airport. I only saw one critters today and it was a caribou in a big hurry to get away from the traffic. I have also included a photo of the Terminal here at Fairbanks. The airline staff were very friendly, even at this hour. It is a good thing I bought some donuts for a travel lunch to travel non-stop except for gas at the border. I was tempted to stop and visit Santa at North Pole, but needed the time to get to Fairbanks. The road was pretty bad, many frost heaves along the way, and a lot of ice. The snow slowed things down too. Well, that's all for now. Until tomorrow.....

Dreams do come true.

It has been months since I wrote last. I'm sorry.
All my adult life I have dreamed of travel to foreign places. Finally, my dream is coming true. EUROPE, the place where many of the guests come from at the hotel where I work. EUROPE, the land of history, the land of our forefathers.
The reservations for the flights are all booked and paid for. Hotels in Rome, London, and Paris are reserved and paid for. Train schedules are deciphered. Luggage is planned. The boss has been notified when I'm leaving. Friends in Europe have been notified when I'll be there.
This trip will be something I'll remember for the rest of my life. As I sit here writing this blog, I'm thinking of the places I'll go, the people I'll meet, the historic statues and buildings I'll visit and photograph, and...the food I will sample as I make my way through the many restaurants available in each city.
As the time to depart comes closer, I find myself nervous with anticipation. I will do my best to write some of my impressions here each day. I will post a few photos here to show where I've been and what I have done. My Facebook page will have more of the photos posted. I will do most of my blog while travelling on the trains between cities, so there will be something new to read here each day.
Keep in touch, folks. I hope you like what I will put here. Until next time, The Yukoner.

Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

Well, as promised, I am able to put up some aurora photos for your enjoyment. Two lovely young ladies for company, a sky filled with stars (constellations were abundant), and a sweet show of Northern Lights. I haven't had a view of the Aurora Borealis when I've had a camera ready to photograph them. While my lens was open and doing it's job, the sky cooperated by adding a flash of red aurora (not sure if I caught it right). I won't know if my pictures will be any good as I was using film and long exposures of 30 seconds. When my film has been processed, if there are any good photographs, I will put them in my next blog, so keep checking here for the next episode in the life of The Yukoner.

I'm sorry that my New Years Resolution didn't make it much past New Years.
It's been a bum start to the year with two heart episodes sending me to the hospital. But at least now everything seems to be working fine. Work has been busy and that has kept me going and allows me to pay those pesky bills month after month.
I've finally started using Facebook (Ron Lang mailto:dutchie1944@hotmail.com) and have begun to put some of my photos of the Yukon out to the public. Overall response has been good. Many of the viewers have not been able to get out there to see the beauty which is ours for all to see here in the North. Those of you who are down south have already begun to see flowers blooming and leaves on the trees. Here, our trees haven't even thawed out enough for the sap to flow. Some tourists have even had the opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) when they go out at night. For them, this is the reason for them to come to the Yukon at this time of year, not too cold, but still dark enough to enjoy the aerial display of nature.
As I write this blog tonight, I'm at work and not on my own computer, so I am unable to add some photos of the things which happen up here in the north. BUT, if you check out my Facebook page, I have uploaded photos of the beauty of the Yukon, the 2010 Yukon Quest, and some of the big and small animals which share this land with us. I will also be adding some photos of the flora which surrounds us here every year, our Provincial Flower, the Fireweed, and many of the different varieties of colour producing plants which grow here in the Yukon. Also some photos of the snow sculpture from our winter carnival called, Rendezvouz.
All photos presented are those which I have taken personally. For more pictures of places where I have not been, I refer you to alaskastockphotos.com . Almost anything you wish to see about the north, has been photographed by someone somewhere and all that's necessary is to walk your fingers across the keyboard to access any of it.
I will close for now and I hope everyone has had a super Easter weekend. See you soon.

Happy New Year

   Well, the new year has started and what a year it's going to be. I'd like to wish all my readers a healthy and prosperous year for 2010. As usual, I, like many others, have made resolutions, which as many others, usually are set by the wayside as quick as we make them. This year I only have two - lose weight and stop smoking. The smoking is a difficult resolution to keep as old habits die hard. But, I am trying..not always successfully but, non the less, still trying. Let me know with your comments how your resolutions are going and what they are.
It's snowing like there's no tomorrow right now, 2 o'clock in the morning. The temperature is -24 with a chill factor of -31 because of the 17 km wind out of the NW. Not a good night to be out. Winter has finally arrived for the Yukon. The weather has been quite mild for this part of the season, so this cold weather is more true to the northern regions. It won't be long before we have the winter rendezvous and the finish of the Yukon Quest in February. Sitting here at work, it's hard to imagine that it is only about 5 weeks until Rendezvous. Hopefully this year I'll have a better chance to take some pictures of the festivities.
Good night to all and I look forward to reading your comments.
